Before a donation reaches your accounting system, TERN checks: Is this the correct transaction type (sales receipt vs. journal entry — the most common and costly mix-up, often introduced by pre-built donor-system integrations that bypass the sales sub-ledger)? Does the fund coding match the restriction on this gift? Are there required approvals before this posts? Is this expenditure a capital acquisition, or an operating expense? This is different from traditional automation, which moves data from one system to another. TERN moves data only after verifying it meets your accounting standards, CRA or IRS requirements, and any organisational policies you have configured. Think of it as the control layer between your operations and your ledger — the function the sector has always needed and never been able to afford.

What is "bring your own AI" and do I qualify?

If you have one of these plans, you can licence TERN connectors and run TERN workflows through the AI you already pay for. This is typically the lower-cost option. If your organization does not have an AI subscription, or you're not sure, that's completely fine — we offer a fully managed option where we deploy a custom agent directly in your Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, or Slack workspace. The guardrails layer: TERN verifies every workflow before it executes — checking accounting standards, fund restrictions, and organizational policies before anything posts. The privacy layer: only de-identified data ever passes to an AI model, we use enterprise API endpoints with explicit data non-retention agreements, and we store only the minimum required data (reference IDs, not underlying records). The human layer: approval checkpoints can be injected at any point in a workflow, delivered to your team via Teams, Google Chat, or Slack — so humans stay in control of sensitive decisions.

That means fund accounting logic, CRA compliance, restricted fund governance, capital-vs-expense judgement, and donor reconciliation workflows are built in from the start, not researched and approximated. Beyond the integrations: TERN delivers the function of internal audit and internal control redesigned for the sector that needs it most — preventive at the transaction, judgement-coaching at the decision point, translating between the technical languages of accountants and the operational language of mission staff. Large platforms will not prioritise these workflows for the non-profit sector. TERN exists precisely because they will not.
